Aluminum Welding & Repair in Delaware and Eastern Maryland
Aluminum is light, it doesn't rust, and it's on everything from boats to trailers to ramps. It's also less forgiving to weld than steel: it needs clean prep, the right filler and the right process, or the repair just cracks again next to the weld. RickTheWelder welds aluminum regularly, in our Townsend shop and on site with the mobile rig, for customers across New Castle County and Kent County, Delaware, plus Eastern Maryland.

Aluminum Work We Handle
Aluminum boats: jon boat floors, ribs and stringers, transoms and brackets (see Marine Welding)
Trailers: cracked deck beams, rails, crossmembers and ramps (see Trailer Repair)
Ramps, handrails and fence parts (see Gates, Fences & Railings)
Cracked or broken tube, pipe, rails and bars
Custom aluminum brackets, frames and parts, one-offs or a run of them (see Custom Fabrication)

Cracked Aluminum, Fixed the Right Way
Most aluminum cracks come from vibration and flex: a trailer deck that bounces down the road, a boat that pounds through chop, a rail that takes a hit. Welding over the top of a crack doesn't last. We clean the metal down to bright aluminum, find where the crack ends, grind it out so the weld goes all the way through, and weld it back up. Where the part keeps flexing in the same spot, we add a plate or gusset so it doesn't crack again beside the repair.
Before and after: a cracked aluminum beam on a trailer deck, and the finished weld along the deck rail.

Before and After: Cracked Aluminum Tube
Before and after: a polished aluminum tube that cracked at the bend, prepped and welded in the shop.

TIG or MIG? We Do Both
TIG welding gives the cleanest, most controlled weld, and it's the right choice for thin material, tube, polished parts and anything that will be seen. MIG welding is faster on thicker aluminum like trailer frames, deck beams and boat structure. Rick is a certified welder and picks the process to suit the part, not the other way around.
In the Shop or on Site
Smaller parts like rails, tubes and brackets can come to the shop at 1210 Dexter Corner Road in Townsend. For a trailer, a boat on its trailer or anything that won't come to us, our mobile welding rig comes to you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can cracked aluminum be welded?
In most cases, yes. The crack has to be cleaned and ground out first so the weld goes all the way through. Send a photo and we'll tell you if it's a repair or a replacement.
Do you TIG weld aluminum?
Yes. We TIG and MIG weld aluminum, and choose based on the thickness and the part.
Can you weld aluminum on site?
Yes. Trailers, boats on their trailers, ramps and railings are often repaired right where they are with our mobile welding rig.
Do you work on aluminum boats?
Yes. Jon boat floor rebuilds, ribs, stringers and transom repairs are regular work. See our Marine Welding page.
Is a welded aluminum repair as strong as the original?
Welding heat softens some aluminum alloys right next to the weld, so a good repair is designed for that. Where a part carries a lot of load or flex, we reinforce it with a plate or gusset instead of just filling the crack.
